St. John's College at SBU Happenings

Activities of SBU's College of Nursing and Health Sciences

Spring 2009 Congratulations

Some of the latest activities of our faculty and staff:

Monta Montgomery, associate professor, is now a Certified Nurse Educator, an honor given to only a small number of nurse educators who have taken and passed the necessary certification examination. We are so proud that we have more Certified Nurse Educators in our college than any other school in the state.

Amy Logan, clinical instructor, passed the nurse practitioner certification examination and is now certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Commission as a family nurse practitioner.

Terri Briggs, assistant professor, was one of 12 registered nurses nationwide chosen to write test items for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. She completed a 4-day training and item-writing session in Chicago. Writers are chosen based on clinical expertise.

Paul Pope, clinical instructor, was accepted into a master of science in nursing program and started classes this spring. Paul manages our First Touch bulletin board at the college and does a beautiful job.

Leah Phillips, clinical instructor, has started her master of science in nursing-nurse educator program.

Cindy Beasley, learning resource center director, is attending courses for her master of science in nursing degree and receiving grant money from the Missouri Hospital Association.

Terri Schmitt, assistant professor, is president of the Springfield Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, Theta Lambda chapter. She is leading an Evidence-Based Practice conference on April 8th.

Dana Hunt, instructor, and Teresa Russell, associate professor, will sit on the discussion panel about Evidence-Based Practice.

Martha Baker, professor and director of the BSN program, is president of the National Alaska Native American Indian Nurse Association. She co-wrote a book chapter titled "Pathways to Leadership: Developing a Culturally Competent Leadership Curriculum for American Indian Nurses," in Transforming Nursing Education: Towards a Culturally Inclusive Environment.
