Eight students and two faculty members are heading to Ecuador on June 27 to provide well-child screenings and health care to under-served children in poor regions of the country. I can’t wait to write more about what those students experience!

Tammy and Tonyha, faculty members, provided health information and teaching at the Lawrence County Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation Back-to-School Fair. More than 150 children and their parents/guardians attended the fair.

Tina, Stephanie, and Tammy, faculty members, took 37 pediatric ASN students to Wilder, Disney, Inman, and Williams Elementary Schools in Springfield and Nixa, where they screened 800 children for height, weight, vision, and hearing.

First-semester ASN students provided injections in the Springfield community flu immunization clinics. Fourth-semester ASN students did oral and poster presentations on providing culturally competent nursing care.

Terri Schmitt volunteered at the Breast Cancer Awareness Tea, performing clinical breast exams. The American Cancer Society and the Missouri Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program sponsored the event.

Dana Hunt led the second annual Homeschool Health and Safety Fair at the college. BSN students, college faculty and staff, and community partners staffed the fair, with co-sponsorship from the Southwest Home Education Ministry. Workers screened 77 homeschooled children for hearing, vision, height, weight, body mass index, blood pressure, and dental, provided an optional fluoride varnish application with a grant from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and administered flu vaccinations with the Springfield-Greene County Health Department. The fair offered multiple educational programs and fun activities. The Springfield Fire Department, Highway Patrol, and Springfield Police Department provided materials, personnel, and demonstrations.

Dana Hunt hosted the Missouri Nurses for Public Health (MNPH) meeting at the college, with 22 nurses in attendance. Seminar topics included winter weather preparedness and the Missouri database for pregnancy risk assessment.

Cool stuff, don’t you think? Watch this space, because we’re doing so many things I can’t put them all in one post!
