Fall 2009 Kudos

A Christmas Kudo, from Leah Phillips, RN, BSN, Clinical Instructor:

I just wanted to share with you how amazing my clinical group is… Our students have been taking care of a young woman who is struggling to live through her leukemia.  This last month she nearly died and is slowly recovering.  She has three children, two in grade school and one preschooler.  She doesn’t have any family except a new husband, no car, and limited resources.  I had talked with her about helping her do her Christmas shopping.  This has been a huge worry for her, but she hasn’t had much hope of being able to do anything for her kids and would never ask for help.  I had asked her to make a list of things her kids would enjoy.  With much prodding by her student, we were able to get some ideas together.  The best part of this is that when the student returned with the list, the rest of the group decided to help get the things on the list.  I am so amazed by their enthusiasm and selflessness in helping out a family that is facing such difficult times.  The students are Samantha Richardson, Jordan Bock, Jenn Walker, Lauren Diagle, Rebekah McGuire, and Marla Cline.

Hurray for those wonderful Student Santas!!

This is a fun Kudo for sure:

Two little girls, maybe aged 8 and 10 or so, walked into the college today (November 30) and handed us an article from the Springfield News-Leader.  The article was a public thank-you letter, which the newspaper calls “a rose,” from the Belt family of Springfield to an unnamed nursing student from our college.  Here is the scanned article: http://www.sjcsbu.us/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/lost-dog.pdf

From a nurse manager at the hospital:

Once again your nursing students from second semester have performed above and beyond the call of duty.  Through their help and patience Wednesday evening went much more smoothly than it could have.  I am sure that Heather, their instructor, would say it was all the students, but I am certain that it is her leadership and example that drives these students to such a level so early in their nursing career.

From a patient’s husband:

One of your students, Kim van Deutekom, cared for my wife yesterday in Labor & Delivery. Thank you for sending such a great student to work with us. Kim was very friendly and professional and she really helped my wife through the day.  This is our first baby and it is a boy.

From a patient:

Student Barbara Hebert and Instructor Paul Pope took excellent care of me, and I want people at the school to know how terrific they are!

Tina Tarter-Hamlet received a lovely thank you note from the school nurse, Charlotte Roberds, for our 3rd semester students’ work at Wanda Gray Elementary School. She especially complimented them on their professionalism! Way to go third semester!!

From a faculty member:

A fourth semester student, Stephanie Posey, is doing part of her management rotation in ETC. When I rounded on her, she had been working with an elderly woman who came accompanied by her husband. The woman was the patient, but they had been there for several hours and the elderly man could not get around easily, so Stephanie wheeled him down to the cafeteria and helped him get some food and then brought him back to the ETC department after he ate. I just thought that it was a very kind action and displayed a student going above and beyond. She appears to be a very empathetic person and the kind of nurse we would want taking care of us and our families :)

From a faculty member:

I thought that I would go ahead and e-mail all of you while I’m at the hospital and the patient’s comments are fresh in my mind.  A patient of Tahra Watson (4th semester) requested to talk to one of her clinical instructors; I spent several minutes in her room listening to her story.  I am so very proud of Tahra for sharing her heart and compassion and truly “touching” her patient.  From the patient:
“She was the first nurse who ever hugged me, who really touched me.  She sat down right beside me on the bed when I was having a really hard day and listened to my problems, it really meant a lot for her to be there after my family had left.  She is going to be an excellent nurse soon.  Medicine is one thing, but to really be “touched” by somebody and know that they care about you, that is another thing all together.  I have really enjoyed all of the care she has given me, and most importantly seeing her “heart” for me and others.  It is so nice to be surrounded by such positive people, this has made  me think about being a nurse someday.  I’ve really enjoyed building a relationship with Tahra and all of the wonderful care she has provided.” – patient from 7B   She also went on to thank all of us for training such wonderful students!
-Hope that brightens everyone’s day…          Thanks, Renay
