Spring 2010 Kudos
The following was submitted by Annette Keller. The student is in second semester. It’s yet another example of the great students we have the privilege to work with.
As I was leaving the hospital, I noticed an older woman sitting on one of the benches in the outer foyer & that little “voice” we sometimes hear told me I needed to stop and talk to her. I won’t go into details, but I know I was able to provide a much needed listening ear. At one point she asked me to pray for her, so I offered to do it right then. When I finished & opened my eyes, her grandson, who had come to pick her up, was standing there with his hands on her shoulders & tears in his eyes. They both thanked me profusely – but, truthfully, I am the one who is thankful for opportunities like this. I was reminded of two things: One, God is always at work, behind the scenes – and while I was able to see the reason this time, I need to remember that this is true even when I don’t understand. And two, what we are called to do as nurses in an incredible privilege – to be allowed inside the life of others, to share their hopes & fears & joys & sorrows. I pray I never lose sight of that fact.
